1.      Sám se totiž soustřeďoval na to, aby našel učebnu, kam má jít.
I … ed it, so I could find out where I should go.
Harry wished they wouldn’t, because because he was trying to concentrate on finding his way to classes.
So učebna is the place where you read your učebnice, kde se učíš.
So, středa is the center of the week, střed is like, the center, and soustředit is to center one's self, like to concentrate one's self.


2.                  V Bradavicích bylo sto čtyřicet dva schodišť.
            In Hogwarts there were 402 staircases.
            There were a hundred and forty-two staircases at Hogwarts:
Ugh, duh. 142.  

3.                  Byly tam dveře, které se neotevřely, pokud jste je o to zdvořile nepožádali nebo jste se jich nedotkli na jediném správném místě, a dveře, které vůbec nebyly dveře, nýbrž pevné zdi, a ty to jen předstíraly.
There were doors which did not open unless you … … or if you did not touch them in the exact right spot, and doors which were not actually doors at all, but small walls? and ...
Then there were doors that wouldn’t open unless you asked politely, or tickled them in exactly the right place, and doors that weren’t really doors at all, but solid walls just pretending.
Zdvořile is a good word to know! Like slušně?
nýbrž is pretty bookish I guess.
pevný is solid. Haha...not solidní, like Lukáš once thought.

Also, that it is a nose, not somewhere else.
5.                  Ten znal tajné chodby po celé škole líp než kdo jiný (snad s výjimkou dvojčat Weasleyových) a dokázal se objevit stejně nenadále jako duchové.
He knew the secret coorridors of the whole school better than anyone else (except … the Weasley twins) and… similarily like a ghost. 
Filch knew the secret passageways of the school better than anyone (except perhaps the Weasley twins) and could pop up as suddenly as any of the ghosts.

Hmm apparently I do not know how to spell cooridors. Coorridors? Cooridoors? ugh...not worth reaching for the mouse.
nenadále : suddenly, what a great word!
se objevit : to suddenly appear

6.                  Jednou usnul před krbem ve sborovně, a když příštího dne ráno vstal a šel na hodinu, své tělo tam nechal.
Once he fell asleep before the fire...and the next morning when he woke up and went to class, his body did not follow.
he had fallen asleep in front of the staffroom fire and got up next morning to teach, leaving his body behind him.
 Okay, so sborovna is somewhat similar to učebna it looks like. But sbor is the...choir? The chorus? The corps? I guess also, the staff?
What is the difference between krb and oheň?
7.                  Na začátku první hodiny si udělal seznam studentů, a když se dostal k Harryho jménu, vzrušeně zapištěl a zmizel jim z očí.
From the beginning of the first class they did a list of students and when they got to Harry’s name...and vanished from the eyes?
At the start of their first class he took the roll call, and when he reached Harry’s name he gave an excited squeak and toppled out of sight.
Seems like this really is the sound that mice make, according to SkELL.


8.                  Každý, kdo by si při mých hodinách chtěl nějak zahrávat, půjde a už se nevrátí. Berte to jako první a poslední varování.”
“Anyone who wants to argue with my classes wants some...will go and will not return. Carry/consider this like the first and last warning.”
“Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back. You have been warned.”
zahrávat is like, to play around, to mess around
berte : to consider, to carry. Huh. Okay.
9.                  Poté co si zapsali spoustu složitých pokynů, dostal každý zápalku, aby se pokusili udělat z ní jehlu.
            Later he asked many different …, he arrived at every...in order to try to do of something a ...cauldron?
After taking a lot of complicated notes, they were each given a match and started trying to turn it into a needle.
I should have picked the word pokyny, since that is much more useful. Uff.

10.              A všichni se museli naučit tolika věcem, že dokonce ani takoví jako Ron neměli nijak velký předstih.
And everyone must learn so many things that in the end even those like Ron didn’t have a big advantage.
There was so much to learn that even people like Ron didn’t have much of a head start.
 But in this sentence, it was a good choice of a new word, at least. Go me. I am so smart and awesome. Haha.
           
11.              Škoda že profesorka McGonagallová zase nenadržuje nám,” řekl Harry.
“It’s a pity that professor McGonagall didn’t ...bring? it again to us,” said Harry.
“Wish McGonagall favored us,” said Harry.
 Hahaha it's like, the one case in a hundred where it's longer to say it in Czech. Also they say it oppositely in Czech. So that is kind of funny.
           

12.              Dobrá, tak nashle odpoledne” a poslal s ním Hedviku zase pryč.
            “Good, so afternoonly goodbye!” and sent to him Hedwig again away.
Yes, please, see you later on the back of the note, and sent Hedwig off again.
I still do not really get this construction. It does not really make sense. I am not sure if he is saying, "see you in the afternoon!" Or "Here's an afternooningly goodbye!" For the record, I am not exactly sure what nashle means. I just know na shledanou...which is like...one of the very first words any Czech as a second language student learns. And it is said like, all the time. 
Doesn't seem as common in texting I guess.

13.              Draco Malfoy a jeho přítelíčkové Crabbe a Goyle si zakryli ústa dlaněmi a hihňali se.
            Draco Malfoy and his cronies Crabbe and Goyle ...their mouth with a … and smirked.
Draco Malfoy and his friends Crabbe and Goyle sniggered behind their hands.
So it looks like if your mouth is with your hands, it is behind your hands.

14.              Stejně jako profesorka McGonagallová si i Snape dovedl bez námahy udržet ve třídě ticho.
            Still like professor McGonagall and even Snape required? to be in the classroom? quiet.
— like Professor McGonagall, Snape had the gift of keeping a class silent without effort.
I should have found this word: námaha, effort
15.              Co získám, když přidám rozdrcený kořen asfodelu k výluhu z pelyňku?”
            “What I’m asking? when I give ...roots of asfodel to … ?”
“What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?”
All the SkELL examples of rozdrcený were funny to me.

16.              Snažil se nevidět Malfoye, Crabbeho a Goyla, kteří se svíjeli smíchy.
            He tried not to look at Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle who hissing their smiles?
He tried not to look at Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, who were shaking with laughter.
Oh, here is smích in 7. pád plural. So the se is not reflexive here, it is a with.

17.              Přecházel po místnosti ve svém dlouhém černém plášti, díval se, jak odvažují sušené kopřivy a rozdrcené hadí zuby, a našel něco špatného málem na každém s výjimkou Malfoye, který mu zřejmě padl do oka.
He walked in the place with his long black robe, looked, as though he … … … and … snake teeth, and found something evil small on every … with Malfoy, which to him fell from the window?
He swept around in his long black cloak, watching them weigh dried nettles and crush snake fangs, criticizing almost everyone except Malfoy, whom he seemed to like.
Talk about crazy examples from SkELL, hadí had only weird ones. 

18.              Jakmile Harry zaklepal, ozvalo se zevnitř divoké škrábání a hromový štěkot.
            As Harry...ed, he … inside strange ...and.
When Harry knocked they heard a frantic scrabbling from inside and several booming barks.
I thought škrábání is kind of like...scribbled handwriting.

19.              Od stropu viseli bažanti a šunky, v měděné konvici na otevřeném ohni vřela voda a v koutě stála mohutná postel s pokrývkou, sešitou z malých kousků.
            From the…, in the ….with open …? water and of ...still ...bed with … of small bits?
Hams and pheasants were hanging from the ceiling, a copper kettle was boiling on the open fire, and in the corner stood a massive bed with a patchwork quilt over it.
Oh! I know the word šunka is ham. 
Why is it that descriptive language is a thousand times more difficult to interpret than dialogue?
And everything interesting to read is in descriptive language. Hahaha. Great.

20.              Tesák si opřel hlavu Harrymu o koleno a celého ho poslintal.
            He … to Harry’s head and around him and all ...ed.
Fang rested his head on Harry’s knee and drooled all over his robes.
By the way, it was really difficult to figure out the meaning of this word in this precise verb aspect.

21.              Harryho i Rona velice potěšilo, když Hagrid nazval Filche “ten syčák starej.”
            Harry and Ron were very glad when Hagrid called Filch “that old bugger?”
Harry and Ron were delighted to hear Hagrid call Filch “that old git.”
 It was hard to figure out the register of this word. It was given in slovník.seznam as "bastard." Um...that is wayyyy too strong of a word, one which would not be appropriate for Harry Potter. At least, the first Harry Potter.
